The Pearl of Africa
Agandi! Welcome to Uganda.
Uganda is often described as “the pearl of Africa.” It is exceptionally beautiful, because of the lush green landscape that covers much of the land. Uganda is so green, due to its many lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. Both the Nile River and Lake Victoria are partly in Uganda. It also has dense rainforests and wooded savannah, where many unique animals and plants can be found.
People have lived in Uganda for thousands of years. They have understood how important it is to protect their land, especially the forests. Unfortunately, today Uganda is having a big problem with deforestation. Deforestation is when a lot of trees are cut down in one spot. Many of Uganda’s rainforests are quickly disappearing, and the animals and people who need them to survive are struggling. Already, animals, like chimpanzees and mountain gorillas, have lost their homes in many places. The trees are being cut for many reasons. The population is growing, and people want more land for their crops, or they use the trees for building materials. One of main reasons the forests are being cut down is to make charcoal. Most people is Uganda (and other countries in East Africa) don’t have access to natural gas or electricity, so they need to use wood charcoal for cooking. When the forests are cut, the environment is degraded and the land quickly becomes unsuitable for many people and animals to live.
Some people in Uganda, and other parts of East Africa, are working hard to stop deforestation. They are trying to find different ways to cook their food, and educate people about why the forests need to be properly managed and protected.
